Algicide (Algaecide)
An algaecide is a chemical or other treatment which either kills or
inhibits the multiplication of algae. The normal sanitizers such as
Chlorine and Bromine will keep algae in check but if they multiply
in an uncontrolled manner an special algaecide treatment will be
required.
Available Chlorine
The amount of chlorine in water available to sanities. Also called
free chlorine or residual chlorine. The activity of a particular
sanitizer may be stated eg. Dichlor is typically 56% available
chlorine. The lowest level of free chlorine likely to give adequate
sanitizing, if all the other parameters are satisfactory and the
bather load is low is 1 part per million. More likely 2 to 3 p.p.m
will be used. Shock Chlorination, during which time bathers should
not be in the water is 5 to 10 parts per million.
